The Little Mapmaker - A Feature Film

Synopsis
Eight-year-old Ellie Mercer sees the world differently. While other children notice the obvious, Ellie instinctively observes patterns in the land—angles of hills, curves of rivers, and distances between landmarks. Her grandfather, Thomas Mercer, a respected surveyor and civil engineer, recognized this rare ability and spent years teaching her how to read the world through maps.

After Thomas dies, Ellie discovers an unfinished map hidden among his papers. The map points to a mysterious place in China called Shanhe Village, where Thomas once worked helping engineers improve flood safety. Determined to understand what her grandfather was searching for, Ellie persuades her parents to travel with her to the village where she was born.

As Ellie retraces Thomas’s clues, she learns about two historic disasters separated by time and geography—the devastating Johnstown Flood in Pennsylvania and a catastrophic dam failure in China. Both tragedies share a haunting similarity: warnings were given, but not believed.

Following her grandfather’s methods of triangulation and observation, Ellie uncovers the forgotten story of Meilin, a young girl who tried to warn her village before the flood. The discovery reveals that Meilin left behind evidence that could have proven the danger and saved lives.

By completing the map her grandfather began, Ellie ensures that Meilin’s courage is finally recognized and that the lessons of the past will help protect the future.
